Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is the oldest and still the most widely used system of medicine in the world today.  It is medicine made exclusively from plants, and it used in all societies and is common to all cultures.

The World Health Organisation estimates that healing herbs are the primary medicines for two-thirds of the world's population (some 4 billion people).

In Australia the most commonly found cultural types of herbal medicine are Western, Aborginal, Chinese and Ayurvedic (Indian), although there are also many other cultures represented in Australia that utilise their own unique and traditional herbal treatments.

Herbal medicine is increasingly being validated by scientific investigation, which seeks to understand the active chemicals found in plants.

Using plants as medicine provides significant advantages for treating many health conditions, however all medications (including natural treatments) must only be administered after consulting your relevant general practitioner and natural health provider.

Medications (including herbal medicine) can interact with other medications and/or may be contraindicated in certain health conditions, so it is unwise to self-prescribe any medications (even if they're natural).

It is also very important that the advice that you receive is from an appropriately trained natural health provider so check the qualifications of the practioner or retail sales assistant before taking a natural remedy.

Murray-Plains Health Spa only provides herbal medicine treatments following a naturopathy consultation.
