Arthritis is a single term, used to describe many conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, and specifically joints where two or more bones meet.

Arthritis-related diseases cause inflammation, pain, stiffness and damage to joint cartilage (which is the tissue that covers the ends of bones) as well as surrounding structures.  This can result in joint weakness, instability and deformities that can interfere with the most basic daily tasks.

Arthritis a major cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia and the number of people with arthritis is growing every year.

There are many forms of arthritis, however the main forms include: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

Many people are on medications for these conditions, and many others self prescribe natural therapies to ease their symptoms as well.  This is not advisable as many natural therapies cannot be used in conjunction with other medications or should not be used in particular disease states.

Murray-Plains Health Spa sees a lot of clients with arthritis.  Often people who have arthritis experience a signficant amount of pain, but their may may bedue to an unrelated muscular or joint issue (that is causing most of their pain) and which is easily treated.

Microcurrent therapy is also used to reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis, and can assist the integrity of the arthritic joint for longer.

A lot of clients are told that there is nothing that they can do (once they have a diagnosis of arthritis) and to just take pain relief.  We challenge this attitude, and tell people that there is a lot that they can do.

People can:

  • increase their mobility and flexibility through walking,
  • relieve their muscular or joint pain through remedial therapy,
  • reduce their inflammation through microcurrent therapy,
  • build up their muscular & joint strength through undertaking specific resistance exercises,  &
  • take appropriate natural remedies to reduce inflammation, instead of simply swallowing pain relieving drugs every day for the rest of their lives.
